Psy-trance or Psy music are some popular terminologies used to refer - Psychedelic trance music. There is a promising and energetic underground movement brewing in a few places in the United States - and Iowa is a major contributor to the Psy scene in the Mid-west and in the entire country. The primary beauty of Psy music is its variations and melodic energy. The various sub-genres within Psy have their own specific qualities to them that intertwine with your senses and create a unique - almost surreal experience. The Mindoutpsyde group based out of Iowa City, IA have put a substantial amount of dedication and passion to what is believed to be an untainted form of musical expression. The community feeling and the togetherness that Psy fans shower on each other is something unique in its own terms.

Psy trance events are an absolute treat to me as a photographer. Almost all lighting inside a Psy trance event are controlled and pre-meditated. These events are also filled with amazing color - making it an exciting environment to shoot abstracts and other crazy black-light photographs.

I find hand-held shots to bring out a lot of impromptu interestingness. Many a tripod-fans frown at the prospect of hand-held shots in limited lighting environments - but I like the feeling of letting loose and going with the flow of light. Psy parties have always been an intense experience for me - and I have had some of my most cherished moments and met the most amazing people in these events. (Some of them who I cannot forget for the rest of my life )

The amazingly positioned static lights and the grand decos are distinctive to Mindoutpsyde parties. They provide a wonderful potential to position subjects clearly while working with the light elements.

Release
The Psy decorative paraphernalia that people bring range from outrageous to capitvating. The one below changed colors based on motion - I had loads of fun playing with it and trying to capture a few interesting moments.

Bliss in Union (2)
I tried a loose silhouette here. The tapestry provided an interesting light element that makes it almost globular. It’s almost like you are deliberately unruly with the camera…(much like getting dirty in the mud and rain) and it’s sheer fun.
